Financial support to the students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has been providing financial support to students in need since the academic year 2005-2006. The Student Support Fund was established by the Senate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (meeting 2771/31-08-2005), with the aim to provide moral and financial support to students, and cover extraordinary expenses that cannot be met by students themselves.

Coverage of extraordinary expenses is approved by the competent committee and these related to:

  • financial support distributed to students who suffer from serious diseases and are hospitalized or at the recovery stage,
  • financial allowances provided to students who face serious financial difficulties, even for a short period of time, due to family problems, which may jeopardize the completion of their studies, and
  • financial allowances provided to students who offer their services part-time to the Aristotle University, meeting current needs.

Fund Resources and Management

Fund resources come from donations, legacies and bequests left to the Aristotle University, as well as subsidies from the Aristotle University Property Development and Management Company. Moreover, funds are raised through various cultural, social and other kinds of events held by the University, which are decided upon by the Senate and organized for this purpose. The first phase entails that forty thousand euros are to be distributed to students by the Aristotle University Property Development and Management Company.

The Fund is administered by a seven-member committee, elected for a three-year term and presided by the Vice-rector of the Aristotle University who is responsible for academic affairs. Thus, the committee consists of five faculty members and two students – one student, selected by rotation each year, in accordance with the order of faculties and independent schools determined by the Student Union of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and one student who attends the same School with the student applying for financial support and who is also the representative of that School in the Senate. Decisions are made by majority rule, while ballots are always open to the public.

Supporting Documents

Students in need of financial support are advised to submit their applications, clearly stating the reasons why they need the financial support of the university. Along with the application and depending on each individual case, they should submit a document certifying hospitalization, the doctor’s diagnosis, or a statement regarding the financial difficulties they may have. Extra documents may be requested, after the applications are examined by the competent committee. Financial allowances are given either in installments or as a lump sum, based on the special characteristics of each case.

All applications, along with the required documents, are submitted to the Aristotle University Property Development and Management Company (on the 1st floor of the Administration Building).
