Museums, Archives, and Collections

The Cast MuseumThe Cast Museum

The Cast Museum – the jewel of the Faculty of Philosophy – the Historic Archive of the University, the Folklore Museum, the Archive of Modern Greek Literature, the collection of rare Greek manuscripts, the book collections of the Central Library, and the incunabula of the Faculty of Theology comprise the collections of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, each one of which could be the material of a single subject museum.
If we add to those the establishment of the Biblical Museum, the archive of the Pedagogic Academy, the Historic Archive of Education, the National Museum of Education, the physics instruments, the maps of the university campus, the portraits of university professors, the architectural models of traditional buildings, the rocks, the fossils, and the museums of Zoology and wild fauna, the flowers, the archive of theatre history, even the Criminological Museum, or the upcoming Sports Museum, and the Forest Engineering Museum of Survey Instruments and Maps as well as many others, one realizes that there is a great cultural treasure here which could, apart from the learning needs of our students, cover the pursuits of the citizens of Thessaloniki on specialised knowledge and culture.
The Teloglion Foundation of Art through the exhibition of its treasures could work as a model for what all these treasures could become. We should note here that the rich collection of professors’ portraits in AUTh – since 1958 – decorates the Ceremony Hall of the Old Philosophy School in AUTh.
