Student Health Care Service
All undergraduate and postgraduate students of Higher Education Institutions, including PhD candidates, are provided with health care services (hospital and medical services), pursuant to relevant provisions of the presidential decree 327/83 (Government Gazette 117/7-9-83 issue A′).
First-year students of all categories undergo a chest X-ray examination, after getting the relevant document from the Registrar’s Office of the School they have enrolled in. The X-ray examination is free of charge for all students, and it is performed in the X-ray laboratory of the AHEPA University Hospital. The X-ray laboratory of the AHEPA hospital has announced that students can get examined daily from 8:00am to 20:00pm, from September to November, based on priority number and the resulting schedules posted. It needs to be noted that chest X-ray examinations performed in other Greek public hospitals, following the above procedure, are also accepted.
Undergraduate students are entitled to health care services provided they complete their studies within the specified duration for their programme of study, including the accepted extension period. The same applies to postgraduate students. Eligible students, who are in the final year of study but have not been awarded their degrees by the end of the academic year, are entitled to health care services until December 31st of that year.
Covering Medical Expenses
Aristotle University students are provided with health care services free of charge. Standard hospitalization is provided and expenses are covered in accordance with the rates applied to civil servant expenditure that are in effect at the time when such aid is granted.
The budget of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and that of the University Student Club provide for health care costs.
Health care services include:
- medical examinations,
- hospital examinations,
- medication prescription,
- paraclinical examinations,
- examinations at home,
- physical therapy,
- dental care, and
- orthopaedic aids.
Medical coverage does not include:
- hearing aids,
- basic medication prescription,
- medical equipment and tools,
- corrective lenses that cost more than 3 euros and contact lenses that cost more than 15 euros,
- spectacle frames that cost more than 6 euros,
- spa therapies,
- payment for private-duty nursing, and
- plastic surgeries.
Student Health Record Booklet
All students are entitled to a health record booklet. Health record booklets are given to students upon registration at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and after they submit an application to the Registrar’s Office of the School they have enrolled in (provided they have not chosen another insurance agency). In case of loss, the booklet is replaced within 2 months.
Student Health Record Booklets are renewed annually by the Registrar’s Office of the School concerned.
Location of Health Care Services
Students in need of medical care may go either to the clinics of the University Student Club (which can be accessed from the entrance in Nea Egnatia Street or from the entrance in 3rd September Street) or to the Primary Health Care Centre of the Aristotle University or to the practice of a contracted doctor (during the appointed working hours on weekdays). In all cases, students have to produce their health record booklets.
Health care services are provided within the Greek State and, more specifically, to:
- Students in the premises of the Faculties and Schools of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
- Students who participate in university trips or do their internship or conduct their thesis outside the Aristotle University.
- Students who are in need of special treatment which cannot be performed in the city of Thessaloniki. If such is the case, it is necessary that students submit the relevant certificate stating the opinion of the doctor appointed to the University Student Club or the doctor appointed to the Primary Health Care Centre of the Aristotle University or a contracted doctor, and get the approval of the competent administrative body of the School concerned.
- Students who are outside the Aristotle University, provided their condition is serious. In this case, students have to inform the Health Service of the University Student Club or the competent administrative body of the School concerned about their condition within two working days.
In order for the expenses to be covered, students have to submit, along with other supporting documents, a medical certificate signed by a doctor working in a public hospital, a rural health clinic, etc., as well as a document of approval from the administrative board of the University Student Club of the School concerned.
Choice of Insurance Agency
In case students are also, directly or indirectly, entitled to health care services provided by another health insurance agency, they can choose the health insurance agency they prefer each time, submitting a solemn declaration to the Aristotle University. Then, expenses are covered by the health insurance agency of their choice.
In case the health insurance agency covers only hospitalization and medical treatment costs or pays for part of hospitalization costs, the Aristotle University or the University Student Club covers the remaining expenses.
Students are provided with medical care in public hospitals (legal entities under public law) or, preferably, in the University Clinics. Medical care may also be provided in private clinics (legal entities under private law), but only in the event that public hospitals cannot cater for a particular case or there are no beds available in case of an emergency. In this case, standard hospitalization expenses are covered by the Aristotle University.
Students in need of hospital care have to submit a special document, provided by the Health Service of the University Student Club of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, to the hospital or clinic in order to be admitted.
The above procedure can be bypassed in the following cases:
- when the Health Service is closed.
- when there is an emergency.
In these cases, the Health Service of the University Student Club should be notified by the patient himself or one of his relatives or the clinic where he is hospitalized within no more than two working days following admission to the clinic, enabling, thus, the doctor appointed to the University Student Club to decide whether there was an emergency or not.
If there is no notification whatsoever, or if a certificate verifying the emergency is not provided by the doctor from the University Student Club or the Aristotle University, the expenses will be incurred by the student himself. The results of the medical examinations are announced only to the student or his parents upon the student’s consent.
Aristotle University students are provided with dental care services in the laboratories of the Faculty of Dentistry and in public hospitals where there is a dental department.
Students are provided with curative treatment like the one received by civil servants.
Students may be referred to a private dentist for a tooth extraction or treatment of infectious diseases of the oral cavity, but not for prosthetic treatment.
Prescriptions written in the health record booklets of students can be given by:
- Doctors appointed to the University Student Club.
- Hospital doctors.
- Private doctors.
In the last two cases, the prescriptions given have to be counter-signed by either the competent doctor or inspecting doctor appointed to the University Student Club within two working days from the day the prescription was issued. Otherwise, the prescription is not valid. The full name of the student, the School, the student ID number, the doctor’s opinion, the date, the signature and stamp of the doctor must be clearly shown on the prescription receipt.
Prescriptions are dispensed at certain drugstores which cooperate with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The prescription is signed by the student when the medication is received.
Paraclinical examinations are conducted in the Aristotle University laboratories, the laboratories of the University Student Club, laboratories of public hospitals, or laboratories of private hospitals when students are referred there by the Health Service of the Aristotle University.
If means are not available, if there is work overload, or if the above agencies fail to run the examinations, etc., paraclinical examinations can be conducted in private clinics or laboratories upon referral by the Health Service of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Examinations at Home
When the condition of the patient makes it impossible for him/her to go to a doctor’s practice, they may call the doctor appointed to the University Student Club during working days and hours. The doctor has to visit the patient on the same day. In case of an emergency, the doctor has to visit the patient immediately.
If the doctor is unable to visit the patient or if the Health Service is closed, provided the patient’s condition is serious, the patient can be admitted to the hospital on duty or a private clinic. In this case, the Health Service of the University Student Club has to be notified within two week days maximum.
In addition to coverage of childbirth expenses, students also receive a birth allowance equal to that granted to civil servants, as long as the student herself or her husband does not receive any other allowance. In case of a cesarean delivery, students are provided with the hospital and medical services mentioned above.
Students who are in need of physical therapy after an accident or for any other reason should submit an application along with the attendant doctor’s opinion to the Health Service of the University Student Club.
Applications are examined by the Health Service, which then makes the final decision. Physical therapy treatment is provided in physical therapy centres of public or private hospitals, after the patient has been referred there by the Health Service of the University Student Club.
If the abovementioned health institutions cannot meet the needs of a patient, then physical therapy treatment can be provided in private clinics or private physical therapy clinics. In this case, the reason why the student could not receive the treatment needed in a public health institution has to be clearly stated on the referral form.
Expenses related to orthopaedic aids are covered pursuant to the provisions that apply to civil servants, and only if such a need is caused by an accident or disease.
Students should submit an application, including the relevant certificate stating the opinion of an orthopedic doctor, which is examined by the Health Service before a final decision is made.
Treatment abroad is justified in exceptional cases, such as when students suffer from a serious disease that cannot be diagnosed or treated in Greece. The final decision is made by the competent committee of the Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity, based upon a) the opinion of a professor or the head of a public university health clinic or the head of a private clinic, b) the recommendation of the Health Service, and c) the relevant approval by the administrative board of the School concerned.
Hospitalization expenses, costs regarding the transfer of patients and their escort, etc., are covered by the Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity.
European Health Insurance Card (E.H.I.C.)
Students who are holders of a Student Health Record Booklet and visit a member-state of the European Union are entitled to a European Health Insurance Card, which provides them with the opportunity to receive medical treatment during their stay in the EU member-state.
For further information, students may contact the Health Service of the University Student Club or the Registrar’s Offices of the relevant Schools.
Students who have chosen another health insurance agency can be provided with this card from their insurance agencies. European Health Insurance Cards are not valid for medical trips.
