Primary Health Care Centre of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Founded with the aim to provide all members of the university community with health care services, the Primary Health Care Centre is an important, innovative service offered by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Moreover, the Centre promotes the development of integrated intervention plans, assisted by a specialist in occupational medicine, with the aim to maintain a safe, hygienic and secure workplace, as well as promoting the implementation of programmes of preventive medicine.
At present the clinic of the Centre, located in a carefully landscaped area, is open daily from 8:30am to 12:30pm and is staffed by two contracted doctors from the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (known in Greek by the acronym EOPYY). This service meets primary health care needs which include clinical examinations, diagnostics and issuing of prescriptions, within the framework of the electronic prescription system of the National Organization for Healthcare Provision, whenever considered necessary by the doctor performing the examination. Thus, non-hospital healthcare needs related to acute (e.g. fever, dizziness, etc.) or chronic diseases, which require medical monitoring of the patient and continuous medication, are met.
It needs to be fully understood by all members of the university community that issuing a prescription is not an administrative act; on the contrary, it requires special medical knowledge applied by a doctor to address the health problems of a patient and meet his/her needs for medication. That is, issuing a prescription is a medical act and the doctor signing the relevant document is fully responsible for it. This is also the reason why the patient has to be present when medication is prescribed, in order to be reexamined and, if necessary, help the doctor change the prescription. In other words, issuing prescriptions to people representing the patients is harmful for the patients themselves.
In order to improve the quality and effectiveness of the services offered and meet the needs of patients in the best way possible, it is highly advisable that they make appointments. Based on international standards, patients are given a 15-minute span for each appointment, which allows doctors to focus on their real problems and needs. This is the reason why the time that the required services are provided, especially with regard to the medical monitoring of a patient and issuing of a prescription for chronic diseases, is often extended by a week on average.
