To be elected as rector, one has to be a full professor of University domestic or foreign, with Greek nationality and excellent knowledge of Greek language, recognized prestige and significant administrative experience.
The Rector appoints, to assist his work, full pofessors or Associate Professors of the University as Deputy Rectors, to whom she/he delegates specific of her/his responsibilities, by ruling aproved by the Council. The ruling that appoins the deputy rectors determines the order in which they substitute the rector if absent, unable or missing for whatever reason. The number of the Deputy Rectors is specified in the organizational chart of the University.
The Senate
The Senate is composed of:
- the Rector, the Deputy Rectors, the Deans of Schools and the heads of Schools,
- one representative of the teaching assistants/ tutors/ research fellows,
- one student representative of each School,
- one representative of the Special Teaching Fellows (S.T.F.),
- one representative of the Administrative Personnel,
- one representative of the Special Administrative-Technical Personnel (S.A.T.P.), and
- two representatives of the postgraduate students and Special Postgraduate Scholars (S.P.S).
Representatives of Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers are also entitled to participate in the Senate. The number of these representatives equals 1/3 of the number of the Schools of the University, that is, neither less than six (6) nor more than the number of the Schools of the University. When the number of Schools is more than fifteen (15), two (2) more faculty members of the Schools that have the largest number of faculty members may join the Senate.
Faculty
Each Faculty is divided into Schools, some of which cover a single discipline and some a group of related disciplines. A Faculty is administered by:
- the General Assembly of the Faculty (G.A. of the Faculty) which consists of the members of the General Assemblies of the Faculty’s Schools,
- the Deanship which consists of the Dean, the Chairs of Schools and one representative of the students of each School, and
- the Dean who is elected for a four-year term.
School
Each School offers a broad range of courses in a specific discipline, which lead to a degree. Each School is committed to encouraging research at the highest possible level and ensuring that its students are given full and comprehensive training. A School is administered by:
- the General Assembly of the School (G.A. of the School) which consists of the Chair of the School, who is a Professor or an Associate Professor appointed for a two-year term, Faculty members, a number of student representatives which equals 50% of the number of Faculty members, and representatives of the Special Postgraduate Scholars (S.P.S.) or postgraduate students, the number of which equals 15% of the number of Faculty members who participate in the G. A. [the G.A. of Foreign Language Schools and the Schools of Physical Education and Sports Sciences are also composed of a number of representatives of the Special Teaching Personnel (S.T.P.) that equals 10% of the number of Faculty members]. All Faculty members participate in the G. A. of the School as long as their number is less than or equal to 30. If the number of a School’s Faculty members is more than 40, then 30 representatives participate in the G. A. and are apportioned among the Departments in accordance to the total number of the Faculty members of each Department. The Registrar supervises the Registrar’s Office staff and is responsible for the smooth operation of the Registrar’s Office in the absence of the Head of the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar also provides information on current legislation, as well as on any legal and administrative issue that may arise. Responsibility for formulating teaching and research policy in connection with the subject areas for which degrees are awarded lies with the General Assembly of the School.
- The Administrative Board (A. B. of the School) operates only when the School consists of at least 3 Departments (otherwise the General Assembly performs the duties of the Administrative Board) and consists of the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Department, the Heads of the Departments, two undergraduate students and one representative of the postgraduate students and Special Postgraduate Scholars. A representative of the Special Teaching Personnel or Special Administrative-Technical Personnel or teaching assistants/ tutors/ research fellows is also entitled to participate when staff issues are discussed.
Department
Schools are divided into Departments which coordinate teaching and research. A Department is administered by:
- the General Assembly which consists of the Faculty members of the Department, two to five student representatives, as long as this number is no more than 30% of the number of Faculty members, and one representative of the Special Postgraduate Scholars (S.P.S.) or the postgraduate students of the Department,
- the Head of the Department who is a Professor or an Associate Professor and is appointed for an annual term by the General Assembly of the Department.
