Experimental Schools

  • The Model Experimental School of the University of Thessaloniki is a special public school which shares close ties with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Until 2012, the school was supervised by a professor from the School of Education of the Faculty of Philosophy (AUTh), who was appointed by the Senate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. As of January 2012, the supervisor is appointed by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and Sports.

The Model Experimental School provides students of the Faculty of Philosophy and other teacher training faculties with practical training in teaching methodology and in education in general. It is an institution where the educational, research and training projects of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are carried out.
Teachers are appointed directly by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and Sports, with the aim to ensure high quality education. The Model Experimental School caters for all levels of education: nursery, primary, lower secondary and upper secondary education.

The Model Experimental School was founded in 1934. The first supervisor of the school was Alexandros Delmouzos, one of the most important teacher-educators in Greece, and the first head of the school was Vassilis Tatakis, one of the greatest professors at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since it was founded, many important teachers have worked at the Model Experimental School: Giorgos Themelis, Ioannis Xirotitis, Poliklitos Regos, Sarantos Pavleas, Constantinos Botsoglou, Nikos Paralis, to name just a few.
The school was housed in a building designed by the great architect Dimitris Pikionis – a building whose aesthetics still attract the interest of architects.
Today, the Model Experimental School aims to meet the needs and demands of contemporary society, and continue its tradition of excellence.

The Education Academy of Thessaloniki was housed in the same area the 1st Model Experimental Primary School is located today. The Education Academy was founded in 1933, pursuant to law no. 5802 (Government Gazette 286/29-9-1933), and – with a short break between 1971 and 1974 – was open until 1990, when it merged with the Education Academy of Florina. As of July 1st, 1991, all education academies in Greece are abolished, pursuant to law no. 1268 (Government Gazette 87/Α) and the presidential decree 24/1991 (GG 9/Α); thus, their archives have been transferred to and the building facilities became part of the School of Primary Education (SPE) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). Teacher training was provided by the Model Experimental Primary Schools of Thessaloniki (2 six-teacher schools, 1 three-teacher school and 1 one-teacher school) which continued to operate when the Education Academy of Thessaloniki was shut down.

Pursuant to the ministerial decision 27/148/C1/160 (Government Gazette 96/14-2-1995), all model primary schools turned into experimental primary schools. The two six-teacher schools as well as the three-teacher school continued to operate. These schools were: the 1st Experimental Primary School SPE-AUTh, the 2nd Experimental Primary School SPE-AUTh, and the three-teacher Experimental Primary School SPE-AUTh. After quite a few years and pursuant to the ministerial decision 71338/D4 (Government Gazette 1573/27-6-2011) the three experimental schools merged into one, that is, the 1st 12-teacher Experimental Primary School SPE-AUTh. The new head of the school, Constantinos Kobos, who was appointed pursuant to the ministerial decision 94132(a)/D1, submitted the relevant documents to the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and Sports which designated the school as one of the 15 model experimental primary schools in Greece, in compliance with the ministerial decision 122084/D4. The school is currently called the 1st 12-teacher Model Experimental Elementary School. Each grade is divided into two classes, except for the second, the third and the sixth grade which are divided into three classes. In total, 15 classes operated during the school year 2011-2012.

The School aims to provide high quality education, promote research, offer practical training to students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and enhance the implementation of innovative and creative teaching methods and tools.
