Despoina Klavanidou is a Professor of Civil Law at the School of Law, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She graduated from the School of Law, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 1984. She received her L.L.M in Civil Law from the School of Law, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 1986 and her Doctorate (PhD) from the same University in 1991. During her postgraduate studies she conducted research at the University of Heidelberg as a scholar of the German Exchange Academic Service (DAAD). She received scholarships from the National Scholarships Foundation throughout her postgraduate and graduate studies. Professor Klavanidou joined the Faculty of Law at the Aristotle University in 1992 as a lecturer and became a Full Professor in 2009.
Professor Klavanidou serves as Vice Rector for Planning and Development of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (September 2014 -).
Professor Klavanidou teaches all modulus related to Civil Law both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level at the School of Law, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Furthermore, she taught Law of Succession at the National Academy of Judges and Prosecutors.
Professor Klavanidou currently serves as the Head of the Evaluation Committee of the School of Law (2013-). She is a member of the General Assembly of the School of Law (1993-1996, 2000-2003, 2004-2007, 2009-2010, 2011-) and has served as the Head of the Department of Civil Law, Civil Procedural Law and Labour Law (2013-2014). She also serves as the Director of Aristotle University’s Day Care Centre and Nursery School. She has been a member of the Senate (2002-2003) and associate member (2008-2009). She was also an associate member of the University’s Research Committee (2009-2013). Furthermore, she has also served as member in a number of committees, among which the University’s Legal Committee (2007-2010), the University’s Compulsory Expropriation Committee (2002-2003) and the University’s Library Committee (2001-2009), to which she currently serves as a Special Advisor (2010-).
Professor Klavanidou serves as a member of the Auditing Standards Board of the Accounting & Auditing Standards Oversight Board (2013-). She has been a member of the Bar of Thessaloniki (1987-2012) and served as a member of the Hellenic Competition Commission (2006-2009).
Professor Klavanidou is a member of many Greek and international scientific associations, including the Hellenic Civil Law Association, the Law Society of Northern Greece, the Macedonian Association for Commercial Law, the Consumer Protection Association, the Hellenic Society of Banking Law and Capital Markets, and the Society of European Contract Law (SECOLA).
Professor Klavanidou’s research interests focus on the fields of Civil Law and European Private Law. Her research areas include the legal aspects of sales’ contracts and consumer loans and in general legal issues related to the protection of lenders, consumers’ protection and environmental protection. She is the author or co-author of a number of books and academic articles and has made presentations and interventions in numerous national and international workshops, congresses and professional associations’ meetings including the Greek Civil Law Society, the Europäische Rechtsakademie (Ε.R.Α.) and OECD’s Working Party No 2 on Competition and Regulation. Her work has been cited extensively in court decisions, books and academic articles.
